Academy Awards Rule Updates Tackle AI, Multiple Nominations for the Same Actor, and More Ahead of 99th Oscars
Updated May 1, 2026, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced significant rule changes for the 99th Academy Awards in 2027. The updates address concerns around AI in entertainment, requiring that roles be performed by humans with their consent and that screenplays be human-authored. This change aims to prevent AI-generated performances from winning Oscars, referencing past controversies like Tilly Norwood and Val Kilmer’s AI portrayal in *As Deep as the Grave*. Under Rule Two regarding Generative Artificial Intelligence, the Academy reserves the right to request further details about human authorship and use.
Additionally, actors can now be nominated multiple times in the same category if they achieve top five votes, though this could lead to self-competition. For example, Kate Winslet might have been nominated for both *The Reader* and *Revolutionary Road* under this rule. The International Feature Film Category now credits films by their name instead of country or region. The Casting category’s maximum statuette awards increased from two to three. Eligibility for Original Songs during end credits requires the last 15 seconds of the film to be included in the video clip. The 99th Academy Awards will be held on March 14, 2027, and will feature a new category for stunt design. The full list of nominees for 2027 is not yet available, but the 98th Academy Awards winners from 2026 are noted for reference.
