Meta is among this year's sponsors at Cannes, but selfies on the red carpet remain banned.

The Cannes Film Festival has no intention of revising its 'no selfie' policy on the Montée des Marches, despite its partnership with Meta and the arrival of a group of creators equipped with smart glasses to produce content from the red carpet. Thierry Frémaux reiterated that the ban will remain in effect: for Cannes, selfies slow down the parade, create confusion, and undermine its solemnity. But it's also to prevent the dissemination of stolen shots that don't match the aesthetics of images taken by professional photographers. The collaboration with Mark Zuckerberg's company—owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—isn't about encouraging selfies, but rather projects linked to digital creativity and immersive content. Introduced in 2018 and often criticized as anachronistic in the social media era, the ban remains a defining characteristic of the Festival. Anyone who violates it risks immediate reprimands from security or removal from the red carpet. Stars will be able to take photos elsewhere, but not on the famous steps leading to the Grand Théâtre Lumière, the heart of the most anticipated premieres.
