Mark Zuckerberg's £730k Met Gala Watch Was Surprisingly Tasteful (and Extremely Rare)

The 'tech bro' to 'fashion guy' pipeline is a strange but fascinating one, but it's not just the central London financiers upgrading from gilets to Issey Miyake Homme Plissé. Facebook founder and now Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is slowly trying to creep into the fashion world. He sat front row at the Prada show in February, and now he's quietly attended his first ever Met Gala, making a quietly powerful impression that suggests he might be a little more savvy than many would expect. For his appearance, he kept the outfit pretty simple with a black tuxedo and bowtie, but the horological grail on his wrist suggests that the man knows his watches. Zuckerberg sported an incredibly rare, and historically important, watch limited to just 35 pieces: the George Daniels Anniversary watch. Dr George Daniels is considered one of Britain's pioneering watchmakers and a visionary in the industry, as he pioneered the 'Co-axial escapement' in 1975, which reduced friction in movements to allow for more efficient functionality. The specific Anniversary model worn by Zuckerberg at the Met Gala was created in 2009, to make the 35th anniversary of Dr Daniels' creation. The piece is classic and classy: with a 40mm diameter it's large enough to be noticeably statement-making without being ostentatious. A large gold ring around the dial is engraved with black Roman numerals, and there are also two small sub-dials showing the date and seconds. As it's such a limited piece, it's estimated to cost somewhere between $400,000 (£295,000) and $1,000,000 (£738,000), making it easily one of the most valuable pieces worn that night.
