US military reaches deals with 7 tech companies to use their AI on classified systems
The Pentagon announced deals with seven tech companies—Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Nvidia, OpenAI, Reflection, and SpaceX—to deploy their AI in classified military systems. This allows the military to leverage AI for tasks like identifying and striking targets, organizing weapons maintenance, and optimizing supply chains. The Defense Department has accelerated AI adoption in recent years, though concerns persist over privacy invasions, autonomous weapon risks, and civilian harm. Anthropic was excluded due to its legal dispute with the Trump administration over AI ethics and safety in war. OpenAI secured a similar deal in March, replacing Anthropic in classified environments with ChatGPT. The Pentagon emphasizes human oversight for autonomous AI missions and aligns AI use with constitutional rights and civil liberties. The contracts reflect a strategic shift toward diversifying AI providers, including new entrants like Nvidia and Reflection, to counter China’s AI dominance. The military already uses AI for routine tasks like maintenance scheduling and troop logistics, but experts warn against over-reliance, citing automation bias risks. The Pentagon’s GenAI.mil platform enables real-time AI integration, aiming to enhance warfighter confidence and national security.
