Oscars to Screenwriters: You Gotta Be Human
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has addressed the role of artificial intelligence in Oscar-eligible films. Starting with the 2027 ceremony, the Academy will inquire about AI usage in movies and how it was applied. For screenwriting categories, a script must be written entirely by humans living at the time of writing (no AI). The Academy reserves the right to modify these rules as AI technologies evolve but remains committed to honoring human work. Additionally, the Academy updated rules for Best Actor nominations, allowing actors to compete against themselves if they appear in multiple films. Films from the same country can now compete in the international feature category. The Academy also revised casting, hairstyle, and makeup rules, and introduced regulations for production campaigns. Notably, *Anatomy of a Fall* (2023) could not compete for France in Best Picture due to country restrictions, while *The Taste of Things* was submitted instead. The discussion around AI in film, exemplified by *As Deep as the Grave* (2024), which uses generative AI to revive Val Kilmer, has sparked debate. Mercedes Kilmer, the actor’s daughter, expressed mixed views: while initially using AI to address his illness, she now sees it as a way to honor his legacy. She noted concerns among industry professionals about AI’s impact, contrasting it with younger generations’ openness to the technology.
